Tip for Microsoft Internet Explorer

Modify the size of your cache memory: In order to optimise the access time for pages you are repeatedly consulting, Internet Explorer keeps the Web pages and images needed in a specific folder which serves as cache memory. By default, this memory can occupy up to 10% of the local hard disk. You may want to increase the size of the memory, for such things as:- Large graphic pages. Go to File/Options/Advanced and adjust by increasing or decreasing the size of you hidden memory. (Don't forget that the sound and videos are also kept with the images in this memory zone.) However be careful: In defining a minimal size for this cache memory too low, you risk taking more time to load web page but this will allow you to save disk space.

What if I forgot my password?

In the case you forgot your password, the only thing to do is to choose a new one and call Club Plus.

How can I change my password?

You can change your password on line here.

I installed Microsoft Explorer and, since, Windows 95 keeps asking me for my password each time I start Windows. How do I cancel this operation?

To cancel the password in Windows 95, go to your control panel, double click on password, on the Password Properties Window choose Change Password and click on Change Windows Password, on the new window enter your old password and leave the two other boxes empty (no password). Click on the O.K. If next time you start windows you still get the password request just leave it empty and click enter. You should not see the window again.

I get disconnected often. Why?

Here are the most common causes of interference.

  • Call waiting is not de-activated. Make sure you have disabled any call waiting service by dialing *70, before the Club Plus Internet phone number.

  • Make sure there is no line noise on the phone if you have, refer the problem to your phone companie.

  • Also, make sure the modem phone wire connections are solid.

  • Bad phone wire or extention wire between the computer and wall plug. Attention some wire are not to the norms, they work fine with the phone and not with a modem.

  • Bad wall plug. Try to connect on a different one in the house.

  • Cellular phone too close to the computer. Electric device (halogen lamp, stereo speaker) too close to the computer.

  • Another phone in the house may be causing interference (try diconnecting all the phone in the house).

  • Make sure nobodyelse is picking up a phone in the house wille you are connected.

  • Maybe some drivers in the network are missing (see below).
  • My surfing is slow

In windows, my computer, in dial-up networking make sure the settings are well set. If the problem occurs again, try to disable the Software compression in server type also in dial-up networking . .

Also it seems that Windows 98. and sometimes 95 have a tendency to forgets their drivers in the network section of the control panel.
Here are certain symptoms that accompany this memory loss.

    Minor Symptoms:-
    1) The speed of surfing slows down and many links do not work, «Explorer or Netscape cannot open this site».
    2) Your e-mail programme is very slow to send or receive e-mail.
    3) Downloading is much slower that usual.
    4) Intermittant disconnection from the internet.

    Major Symptoms:-
    1) Impossible to connect to the internet.
    2) You can connect to the internet, but it is impossible to open your start-up page and impossible to send or receive e-mail.

To correct this problem go to your My Computer section and open the Control Panel. Now open Network remove the Dial-up Adapter in your network, and don't be surprised if other components disappear as well.

    What is my email address?

Your email address contains two parts: your username and the host (which is clubplus.net). For example, if you username is 'smith', then your email address is: smith@clubplus.net
You can receive and send messages to people who have an email address.

My friends can not do a Reply to Author from my messages!

You have to make sure that your e-mail address is entered in your e-mail options

With Outlook EXPRESS go to your e-mail program Tools then Accounts. In the new window select pop.clubplus.net mail account and click Properties in General / e-mail address enter user@clubplus.net and click OK
To created a new mail account

With Internet Mail 3.1 Go to your e-mail program click on Mail/ Option then select serveur / enter your e-mail address user@clubplus.net then click Advanced Setting, in this new window enter your reply address user@clubplus.net and click OK
    More details
With Netscape, go to your e-mail program click on Edit / Preference then Mail and News / Identity enter your address user@clubplus.net and click OK
    More details

Why do my messages come back?

For many reasons, you might receive a message containing an email you sent before. The header of this mail gives you the reason why your message did not go through. Make sure you entered the recipient as it is supposed to be.

Why do I get timed-out connections?

This might happen if the server is overloaded sending mail. If it used to work and you did not change anything in your configurations, then try to send or retrieve your email in a few minutes.
Make sure you have the right configurations that will allow you to receive and send your email. In Netscape mail, and Explorer the SMTP server should be 'mail.clubplus.net'. The POP server should be 'pop.clubplus.net' and the POP account should be your username.
Make sure all instances are in lower case.

Can I send big files using my email?

Purpose of email is not to transfer huge files. Retrieving a big file from your mailbox will just slow down the server. There are also many tools that allow you to transfer files directly to someone who is online. You can use the IRC to send and receive your files. Also, ICQ has a feature that sends out files to people.

    What is a Newsgroup

Newsgroups are like a virtual bulletin board, where groups of computer users exchange articles tagged with predetermined subject headers. The electronic mail "articles" are sent quickly and easily over the Internet. Usenet can also be considered the first real interactive computer discussion group.

    Features of Usenet:

    How can I access them?

With Microsoft Explorer and Netscape Navigator and Communicator, it is possible to browse through all the newsgroups available at Club Plus. You can also use any other News client such as Forte FreeAgent or NewsWatcher. Make sure you specified 'news.clubplus.net' as the news server in your program's configurations.
If you use Netscape Navigator, you can display all the newsgroups by selecting 'show all newsgroups' from your 'options' menu in Netscape News. This will load all the available newsgroups and can take up to 30 minutes the first time on a 28.8 connection.

What restrictions do I have when I'm using the newsgroups?

No spam, no porn, no warez (pirated software). See your contract for more infos.

    Chatting stuff

I heard of chatting on the net. How can I do that?

There are a lot of chatting facilities on the net. One of the most popular is IRC. IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It is a means of communication whereby people from all around the internet can join in with real time conversations. When joining a channel, messages from people in that channel are displayed and you can reply to all of them. You need an IRC client. You can download one at Shareware.com. We recommend 'mIRC' which is available at 'http://www.mIRC.com', or Ircle (http://www.ircle.com) for Mac.
There are different IRC networks. When you are connected to an IRC server, you can also communicate with all the users that are connected to servers of the same network. The most popular network is 'EFNET', but there are also 'Undernet' and 'DALNET'. Sometimes, an IRC server might refuse you access. If it happens, try to connect to any other IRC servers that is connected on the same network.

On IRC, what restrictions do I have?

    No bots.

    Descriptions of Common Viruses

For descriptions of worm type viruses like "I love you, Kak, Prettypark, Happy99 etc...

Although there are now more than twenty thousand different viruses, only a small number of viruses account for most of the infections. Viruses are potentially destructive software that spreads from program to program or from disk to disk. Computer viruses, like biological viruses, need a host to infect; in the case of computer viruses this host is an innocent program. If such a program is transferred to your PC, other programs on your PC will become infected. Even though some viruses do not intentionally damage your data, We consider all viruses to be malicious software since they modify your programs without your permission with occasional disastrous results. The bottom line is that if you have a virus, you are no longer in control of your PC. Every time you boot your PC or execute a program the virus may also be executing and spreading its infection. While most viruses haven't been written to be destructive, almost all viruses can cause damage to your files--mostly because the viruses themselves are very poorly written programs. If viruses destroy nothing else, they destroy your trust in your PC--something that is quite valuable.

Here the most common type of virus.

    DOS Boot Sector
is a small area on each floppy diskette or hard disk that can be executed when you boot your PC.
    Partition Sector
is the first sector on your hard disk that contains the partition table and a small program that executes when you boot your PC. This is also known as a "Master Boot Record" (MBR).
    Macro Virus
These type of viruses utilize the built-in macro language specific to some product such as MS Word. Only users of this particular product can become infected by this type of virus. Almost all macro viruses (currently) are specific to the MS Word product.
    FAT
The File Allocation table contains the information needed to tie disk allocations together. In other words, the FAT governs which areas on disk belong to a particular file and in which order. Damage to the FAT can cause damage to directories and individual files.
    Polymorphic
describes a virus that infects each object differently in an attempt to fool virus scanning programs. These type of viruses can't be detected with a simple pattern match as is possible with most viruses.
    Resident
viruses attach themselves to your operating system and then hide in memory just like a terminate and stay resident (TSR) program such as SideKick.
    Stealth
viruses attempt to hide their presence. (e.g., if you try to read an infected file, it may appear uninfected.)
    Do you have a virus?

If you think that you have a virus and but are not sure what to do, then first look for the warning signs:

Of course, there are other causes of the above mentioned symptoms, ranging from hardware problems to user error, but they can indicate the presence of a virus infection.
